Our home game was our best of the season. Between Jayson and I, we scored seven goals. Every so often I would glance over to the stands to find Ava on my dad’s lap, clapping and cheering.

Laken wore a sweet smile that made warmth spread through my body. Maybe that’s why I played better than I ever had before. After the game Ava ran as fast as her little legs could carry her until she was close enough to jump into my arms.

I threw her up onto my shoulders, taking her over to my parents and Laken. I bent down, kissing my girl before greeting my parents, all with Ava on my shoulders.

We went for a quick lunch because I had to be on the bus for Fresno by five in the evening. That made for a long day, and by the time we got there Trey and I collapsed on our beds and promptly went to sleep.

Our game started out good, and quickly it turned into a shit show. The other team wasn’t as good as us, but they were kicking our ass. Maybe because I had other shit on my mind—I knew Ava was going to be leaving Laken anytime now and I knew it was going to be hard on Laken. Hell, I was going to miss her like crazy too.

After coach ripped us a new one in the locker room, we showered and then got on the bus to head home which leads to now.

The bus comes to a stop in the parking lot next to the soccer field. I grab my bag and throw it over my shoulder. I want to go home, take a hot shower, and go the fuck to bed.

I catch a ride home with a couple of the guys. They pull up in front of my building, and I climb out of the back seat. I’m halfway up my walkway when I realize Laken is sitting on my steps.

As I get closer, I can see the pain in her eyes. I hold my hand out until she takes it, not letting it go until I let us into my apartment. After tossing my duffle bag on my bed, I pull Laken into my arms as she cries softly.

“I-I’m sorry to just show up. I know-I know you’re probably tired, I just didn’t know where else to go.” She sounds so sad right now, and I hate it.

“What time did your parents come get her?”

Laken rests her cheek against my chest. “They left about two hours ago. Nicole was gone, and I just kept sitting there by myself crying.” She shrugs. “I just started walking and ended up here.”

“Come sit on the sofa.” I lead her over and set her down. “I’m going to jump in the shower real quick. When I get out, if you’re hungry I’ll make us something to eat.”

I hand her the TV remote and kiss her lips. In the bathroom, I take the world’s shortest shower and hop out.
